Native to Japan, Korea, and China, hostas were first discovered by Europeans in the seventeenth century and were being commonly imported and grown in Europe by the late 1700’s. By the mid-1800’s hostas were growing in the United States, and today, there are thousands of species and cultivars available to the home gardener.

Hostas are shade-tolerant plants that grow very well in morning sun but really need to be in filtered shade in the hot afternoons in the summer.

To plant, work up a good bed for them with coir and compost to hold moisture and add nutrients. Plant them by covering up the root system (bareroot) or setting them into the ground level with the surface of the soil in the pot(container) and then water in to settle the replaced soil. A good soaking once a week if it does not rain will keep them going and in good condition. In addition to the colorful and interesting leaves, Hostas have nice flowers — many are even fragrant.

Hostas are one of our finest and easiest to grow perennials. Rarely will you have any problems with them. Most Hostas will develop to their full, mature size in just 2 or 3 years.

The American Hosta Society (www.hosta.org) gives the above sizes for Hostas, although exact growth habit will depend on your soil and other growing conditions.
