Aconitum fischeri (monkshood)

Striking 18-24" tall spikes with blue flowers from late summer to early fall when few other flowers are in bloom. Each individual flower is shaped like a little helmet or hood, giving the plant its common name of monkshood. Strong stems do not not require staking, making this plant a great choice over delphiniums. Distinctive deeply divided, dark green glossy foliage is pretty even when the plant is not in bloom. Prefers part shade, especially afternoon shade, but will tolerate more sun given more moisture and rich soil.

This Asian campanula relative grows to 30” tall, with spikes of flaring lavender-blue bells summer to fall. Fragrant flowers are good for cutting too. Plants form fleshy roots that spread with age. Deadheading will promote more bloom. Loves rich, moist soil but tolerates dry, hot periods and also self sows.

From large, thick , glossy, rounded leaves emerge 18-24" stems holding clusters of antique pink flowers in spring and early summer. Foliage turns beautiful shades of red and pink in fall. Plants are drought and heat tolerant. Excellent mixed with grasses and other finely textures perennials.

Intense blue flowers in summer are surrounded by glossy green foliage which turns vibrant scarlet in fall. This low groundcover grows vigorously around other perennials and shrubs 6-10" high and has wonderful multi-season ornamental usefulness. Very low maintenance plant.

Equisetum hyemale (horsetail)

Hollow, segmented, tubular stems grow to 4' tall and grow in dry soils to wet, marginal pond conditions. An ancient native plant, limestone fossils are easy to find in local rock. Makes a great Japanese style garden subject, but spreads rampantly. Plant in contained areas, or in places where its spread won't overcome other plantings. Excellent greenery in cut flower arrangements. Super-cool container specimen plant all by itself.

Tiny evergreen foliage on spreading, flat stems make wonderful miniature garden plants. Excellent delicate texture for planters, rock gardens or edging. Does equally well in sun and shade, and tolerates poor soils, drought and heat. Plants grow only 2-4" tall and are a spreading groundcover. Left to their own devices, they can form interesting stalagmite-like towers of green after many years.
