Semi-evergreen shrubs grow quickly in ideal conditions, more slowly in poor, clay soil. Prefers moist, well-drained location but tolerates clay, damp, or dry soil and grows 3-5' high and wide with a spreading, dense, rounded habit. White, trumpet-shaped blooms mature to a light purple-pink color, and flowers strongest in early summer but continuously through frost. Flowers are slightly fragrant and foliage turns bronze-green to bronze-red in winter. Plants will tolerate heavy pruning.

Early spring blooms of scarlet-red. Profuse flowers open on almost bare stems before foliage emerges. Quince is on of the first plants to flower each spring, and artful twig arrangements can be forced early in a vase when clipped and brought inside. This cultivar grows 3-4' tall and around.

While the species itself reaches over one hundred feet tall in its native Japan, this dwarf selection of hinoki cypress matures at about 15' tall and forms a slender and graceful column up to 6' wide. Twisted, deep green fronds are held on tiered branches, and the open habit makes this the perfect evergreen for the Asian inspired garden. Careful pruning can keep this plant shorter if needed. UVery useful for height near entries where space is tight and light is limited. Afternoon shade is essential in hot climates.

Small pink fragrant blooms emerge in spring over gorgeous blue-green leaves edged in a creamy white. Very easy to grow in marginally fertile soils in afternoon shade. Grows to about 3' high with a slightly wider spread and is evergreen in our zone 5 garden in all but the coldest of winters. Hard to find, this shrub does not like to be moved once planted. You will love this bush.
