Prefers rich, moist soils for optimum growth but will tolerate average garden conditions. Grows up to 3' high and wide. In it's native northeast North American range it is frequently found in wet woodlands and shady stream banks.

One of our largest ferns, established plants can reach 3-4' in height. Found from Virginia west to the Mississippi and north into Canada, this cold hardy fern can tolerate the heat of the South. Useful in natural plantings and allowed form a colony, or in more formal shade gardens with hostas and other shade loving plants. The more water you provide, the more sun it will tolerate. Great in containers, too!
