Hardier than their American cousins (Buxus sempervirens), these
broadleaf evergreen shrubs will survive -20 to -25° F without
difficulty. Bright green new foliage darkens to shiny deep green.

x burkwoodi 'Carol Mackie'
Fabulous shrub for shade or part sun, it grows at the nursery
in poor soil with virtually no help at all from anyone. A small,
#1 gallon container specimen was planted in 2000, and by 2005
was 3' tall and wide. 'Carol Mackie' has long, rounded dark green
leaves edged thickly in ivory, giving the shrub excellent ornamental
value all year round. In spring, fragrant pink blooms appear
that age slowly to white. Red berries follow. Mature size is
4-5' tall and 5-6' wide. Zone 4-8

Picea glauca 'Conica' (dwarf Alberta spruce)
This spruce variety was found in Canada in 1906 and has taken over the American landscape by storm since. A white spruce, the tree has a compact pyramidal form which lends formal style to landscape designs. Tiny green needles can be lightly sheard into topiary shapes, and with their extremely slow growth (about 1/2" per year) and cold hardiness, they make an excellent choice for year round containers. In Kansas, dwarf Alberta spruce grow to 6' in about 35 years, with a spread of 3-4' at the base. Zone 2-5 |
