 Fallugia paradoxa (Apache plume)

Wonderful southwest native grows 4-6' tall and wide and produces Anemone-like flowers of pale pink to white from late spring through summer. Dramatic feathery pink seed pods last through winter providing four season interest. Can be difficult to establish and must be planted in dry conditions in full sun. Zone 4
Fillipendula rubra 'Venusta' (Martha Washington's plume)

Very large, showy pink flower plumes from summer through fall. Vigorous plants grow to over 4' tall with a spread of 3-4'. Zone 4
Gaillardia aristata (blanket flower)

Spreading wildflower with daisy-like flowers of yellow, bronze and scarlet in summer. Adaptable to many soils, and an excellent butterfly garden plant. Zone 5
Gaura lindheimeri (appleblossom grass)

Airy sprays of white aging to rose-pink bloom all summer on this 4' prairie native. A wonderful back of the border plant, or try some interplanted with native grasses and tall native coneflowers and rudbeckias. Zone 5
Gaura lindheimeri 'Passionate Rainbow' (appleblossom grass)

Deep pink flowers atop tricolor foliage on dwarf plants growing to 24". Blooms all summer! Wonderful heat and drought tolerance. Try one in a container planting. Zone 5
Geranium maculatum (wild geranium)

Five-petaled rose-purple blooms in spring on 2' tall plants. Thrives in full sun to part shade. Zone 3
Geum triflorum (prairie smoke)

Nodding, dusty pink, spring flowers are followed by swirling, feathery seed heads. Grows 12-15" tall in full sun in dry conditions. Zone 3
Helenium autumnale (Helen's flowers)

Yellow, daisy-like flowers are produced in summer and last through the hot part of the season when few others manage to look fresh! Grows 24-30" tall with a dense habit. Flowers make great cuts, and butterflies are attracted to them. Zone 4
Helianthus maximilliani (sunflower)

Clusters of bright yellow flowers in September atop 6-8' stalks. An important livestock food source that also feeds birds. Zone 4
Heliopsis helianthoides 'Summer Sun'

Bright golden-yellow, double 4" flowers open in late summer and last through fall on stalks that grow 3-5' tall. Full sun perennial with excellent drought tolerance. Attracts butterflies and makes great cut flowers. Zone 4
Hepatica Americana (liverleaf)

White, lavender, pink or blue flowers in spring over heart-shaped, evergreen leaves with three pointed lobes. Shady woodland native grows to 6" and usually goes dormant by early summer.
Hieracium aurantiacum (devil's paintbrush, hawkweed)

How did we not have this plant in our gardens until this year?! Orange-red 1" flowers appear in clusters atop 12-18" stems over foliage rosettes in mid-summer. What a cool plant for full sun and dry sites. Zone 4
Ipomopsis aggregata (scarlet rocket)

Another heirloom garden plant that crosses over from the native plant list. Showy, intense red tubular flowers on 6' spikes in July and August make a splash in the heat of summer. Biennial plants can be treated the same way hollyhocks are grown, allowing plants to self seed and spread. Fine, ferny foliage is also attractive. Zone 5
Iris cristata (dwarf crested iris)

Very dwarf plants grow only 6" tall and produce blue flowers in early spring. Foliage makes a nice contrast, and plants are drought tolerant. Plant in sun to part shade. Can be divided every few years. Zone 3
Iris versicolor (northern blue flag)

Deep blue to purple, and rarely even white flowers with spreading sepals with purple veins. Blue flag flowers in late spring on a compact two to four flowered inflorescence. The bluish-green leaves are wide arching, up to four feet long and arise from shallowly rooted, large, branching rhizomes forming clumps. Commonly found growing on lake shores, swamps, and wet meadows. Great choice for the deep part of a rain garden. Grows 2-4' tall. Zone 4
Iris virginiana (blue flag)

Tall, bold wildflower with pale-green sword-like leaves in strong, flat vertical fans. Large, showy flowers are almost 4” wide, and deep blue-violet with yellow and white markings growing on stems up to 3 feet tall. It will grow in ordinary garden soil but prefers moist, rich soil where it forms colonies and can be used in bog or water gardens. The foliage looks best when planted in partial shade, but the flowers bloom best in full sun. Grows 3' tall. Zone 4
