We've had cats and dogs since we were kids, and through the years we've chosen to give strays the run of our home and later our offices, too. We just love cats and dogs!

We also spent seven years as wildlife rehabilitators. From 1987 until 1991, Amy was one of a tiny staff who ran Wildcare when it was a part of the University of Kansas, and she spent many, many hours caring for all kinds of wonderful wildlings, from tiny hummingbirds to bald eagles, gray squirrels to bobcats.
Having seen first hand what pesticides, herbicides and the careless handling and disposal of the by-products of farming & industry can do to birds and mammals alike, it has always been the top priority as nursery and greenhouse operators to do nothing that would harm any pet or wild animal.

When we had our kids, that threw a whole new angle into the picture and our resolve to be a part of a greater environmental awareness was even stronger. Not only do we try to provide sanctuary to all creatures on our farm, we also strive to be a responsible part of the global environment, participating in progressive change wherever we can. (See our link to Bonneville - Zephyr Energy)

When you come to Vinland Valley Nursery, you can be assured that you will never come into contact with any chemical residue on the grounds, nor will you take any such chemical home with you in your plants that could harm your children, pets or backyard wildlife. Additionally, you can be sure that we do everything in our power to welcome tiny hummingbirds and bees into our greenhouses, we encourage snakes, frogs and skinks to do their part controlling insects and rodents, and we never, ever do anything to endanger the balance of insects, plants and wildlife on our farm. Even our deer are polite about leaving our baby trees alone (mostly).
Everything you need to grow a beautiful, sustainable garden that's healthy for people, pets, wildlife and the planet!

HOW TO BREW AN INSECT KILLING POTION THAT CAN BE USED TO SAFELY RID YOUR YARD OF CHIGGERS!
Worm Tea Recipe
There are microorganisms in worm castings that are natural cellulose degenerators. They are in the family of Chitons. The exoskeleton of all insects is cellulose, and once the insect comes into contact with these they will begin to eat away at the insect. The insects can stay and be consumed or leave for friendlier surroundings. Either way you win!
Materials:
1- 5 gallon bucket
2- cheese cloth
3- small aquarium pump with aeration stone
(NOTE: SEE OUR PREMADE REUSEABLE KITS)
Ingredients:
5 gallons of de-chlorinated water. This can be rain water or tap water that had set in the sun for at least 24 hours. You can also use de chlorination solutions for fish tanks.
1/3 Cup of Molasses - this will serve as a food source for the microorganism you want to expand and grow
1/3 Cup of vegetable oil this acts as a "sticker" for the solution when applied to foliage and will smother insect larva eggs
Instructions:
Dissolve molasses in water.
Add oil and insert aeration stone.
Place about 1 to 1.5 pounds of worm castings in double layer of cheese cloth and secure well.

Place into bucket or you can add worm castings loose into bucket and filter through the cheese cloth before the application process.

Aerate water for about 24 hours. This will allow the population of microorganisms to rapidly expand.

Remove aeration stone and cheese cloth and apply mixture to all vegetation via a garden sprayer or misting bottle. This mixture is only viable for about 24 hours. After that the population of microorganisms begins to diminish rapidly. One gallon will cover one acres. This solution will kill virtually all insects including white fly, aphids, squash bugs, ants, fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, termites, flies and chiggers to name a few. Worm tea is nondiscriminatory. It will kill beneficial bugs as well.Reapplication will be necessary after rain or watering, and periodically to eliminate eggs that have hatched since last spray application.

 Fertilizers
Bradfield Organics®
Blood Meal
13-0-0 Natural Fertilizer
• Naturally produces more vigorous plants with richer,
greener leaves
• A time-proven remedy for sickly plants
Bradfield Organics® Blood Meal fertilizer is an excellent source
of readily available nitrogen and is thus an excellent food for nitrogen-needy plants such as lawns, corn, lettuce, and other garden greens. It can also be mixed into compost that has a
high carbon content (shavings, straw, shredded twigs, etc.) to encourage faster, more complete and nutrient-balanced decomposition.

 DIRECTIONS
Lawns: 2.5 to 3.0 lbs per 100 square feet every 90 days during growing season.
Gardens: Mix 4 ounces per 10 square feet into topsoil prior to planting. Afterward, broadcast same amount every 90 days during growing season.
Note: Nitrogen-fixing plants such as peas, beans and other legumes do not require high-nitrogen fertilizer. Do not over-apply to new plantings, as relatively rapid nitrogen release may damage roots of tender seedlings.

5 lb (2.27kg) $12.95

Bradfield Organics®
Bone Meal

DIRECTIONS
Gardens: Thoroughly mix 10 ounces per 100 square feet into soil 30 to 60 days prior to planting.
Shrubs and Perennials: Sprinkle 2 to 3 ounces around the base of the plant and gently work into surface soil at the beginning of the growing season.
Fruit Trees: Sprinkle 10 ounces per inch of trunk diameter around the dripline of the tree in February or March. Gently work into soil and water.

ESPOMA Holly-tone

4-6-4 organic plant food
1 pound equals approx. 3 cupfuls

Azaleas, rhododendrons and laurel are shallow rooted plants. Keep them mulched and well watered in dry weather. Do not cultivate near them as surface roots may be cut and the plant damaged.

Planting
Dig hole larger than root of plant so that roots can spread naturally. Discard 1/3 of the soil removed and replace it with good humus. Add 1 cup of Holly-tone and mix thoroughly into planting soil.
Feeding
Established acid-loving plants should be fed twice yearly, spring and late fall. Sprinkle Holly-tone around like adding salt and pepper to food. If the area to be fed is mulched it is preferable to remove the mulch, feed, and then restore the mulch on top of the application of plant food. If this is not possible, double all recommended feeding rates.
Spring
Trees: 1 lb. (or 3 cups) of Holly-tone per inch of trunk diameter. Triple the quantity for diameters 3 inches and over.
Shrubs: 1 cupful of Holly-tone per foot of branch spread. Double the quantity if branch spread is 3 feet or larger.
Beds: Preparation of new bed - mix 10 lbs. of Holly-tone per 100 square feet (or 1 cupful per 3 sq. feet of area) and incorporate into the top four or five inches of soil. Feed established beds 5 lbs. of Holly-tone per 100 square feet (or 1/4 cup per plant).
Fall
The plants should be given a light feeding in the late fall. Use 1/2 the quantities recommended for spring.

5 lb (2.27kg) $4.95

ESPOMA Plant-tone

We offer this limited selection of chemical fertilizers. While the minerals in chemical and organic fertilizers are the same, it is the manufacture of these products and the ease in which they are overused in our environment that causes the problem. When used improperly, they can easily harm and even kill plants. Keep this in mind when choosing products to use in your landscape.
Osmocote
chemical plant food
Slow release pellets of chemical plant food make feeding plants effortless. Mix in with soil and keep off of plant leaf and stem tissue for best results. Hot temperatures can cause sudden release, which can burn plants. Use amounts as directed for container and garden bed size.

Back to Nature Cotton Bur Compost

United States Compost Council Seal of Testing Assurance

Use this product as a top dressing around newly installed plantings, and also to boost soil condition in older landscapes.

All chemicals used on cotton are required to be bio-degradable within two weeks according to an EPA decree. Beneficial organisms eliminate nearly all remaining trace chemicals during the 4 month compost process. Back To Nature is a member of the United States Compost Council and their products have their "Seal of Testing Assurance". They submit samples several times each year for testing.

There are less chemicals in Back To Nature Composts than exists in nature, according to the company. The product cannot be certified organic because they are produced from an agricultural product, but many certification agencies say that composts with USCC's seal of testing assurance are safe for organic gardening.

The biggest concern for using cotton bur for compost has been arsenic acid, used as a defoliant on cotton for nearly 50 years until the EPA banned it around 12 years ago. And that product has never been used on Texas High Plains cotton, the raw material used in BTN, anyway because early freezes normally act as a defoliant. When chemical defoliant is necessary, sodium chlorate, not arsenic, is the defoliant of choice.

From what we can find, BTN Cotton Bur Compost is as clean or cleaner than the free compost given away by the City of Lawrence each year which is made from private yard waste that is typically more chemically treated by residential users who are not trained or monitored in the application of pesticides and herbicides.

Milky Spore Disease

If you have a mole infestation or yellowing patches in your lawn, chances are you have an overabundance of Japanese beetle grubs in your soil. Reduce their numbers naturally to protect birds, pets and children who come into contact with the lawn.

The number one Japanese beetle control, Milky Spore ( Bacillus popilliae ) targets and discriminately works to attack the white grubs of Japanese beetles. Spreads naturally as each infected beetle larvae dies, decomposes and releases billions of new spores into the soil. Time must be allowed for this process to completely saturate a treated area, but only one application is required as the disease continues to multiply on its own, as long as larvae are present. When there is no longer a grub infestation, the disease remains dormant, waiting for subsequent populations. Once established in a lawn, Milky Spore has been known to last 15 to 20 years.

Not harmful to beneficial insects, birds, bees, pets or humans.

Concern Copper Soap Fungicide

Suited for use both indoors and outdoors.  Effective for treatment of downy mildews, leaf and fruit spots, blights and rusts.

CONCERN COPPER SOAP FUNGICIDE® for Flowers, Fruits, & Vegetables is a patented, fixed copper fungicide, made by combining a soluble copper fertilizer with a naturally-occurring fatty acid. The copper and the fatty acid combine to form a copper salt of the fatty acid, known technically as a true soap. The CONCERN COPPER SOAP FUNGICIDE® controls many common diseases using low concentrations of copper, down as low as 90 ppm. The net result is an excellent vegetable, fruit and ornamental fungicide.

CONCERN COPPER SOAP FUNGICIDE® for Flowers, Fruits, & Vegetables is suited for use in domestic circumstances, both indoors and outdoors. The National Organic Standards Board of the USA allows fixed copper to be used in organic crop production for controlling plant diseases. A wide range of bacteria and fungi attack plants, however, they generally only cause a few types of diseases. When using CONCERN COPPER SOAP FUNGICIDE® for Flowers, Fruits and Vegetables it is important to identify the type of disease in order to use the best method of disease control.

Soil Moist

Keeping plants evenly watered is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress, keeping them healthy enough to resist pests and disease naturally.

Stores over 200 times its weight in water! Soil Moist is a super absorbent "agro-polymer" that traps water that would normally percolate by root zones. As the soil dries, the stored water is released back to the plant roots.

· Reduces plant waterings · Reduces evaporation of moisturel · Time releases fertilizer and water · Encourages deep root penetration · Reduces compaction · Minimizes transplant shock · Lasts several seasons · Cost effective · Environmentally friendly

Excellent for use in hanging baskets and other containers with water-hungry plants like impatiens! Also great for people who travel, so plants can be left without care for extended periods of time.
