A healthy soil is the starting point for happy plants, and after 2 years of using this mix we've found this is the best growing media we've ever used. It just happens to be organic!

Containing zero synthetic chemicals and designed for both retail and professional use, Fafard's Organics Potting Mix is made from 100% organic materials, including certified Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss, aged pine bark, perlite, dolomoitic limestome, gypsum and all-natural Nature Safe fertilizer and is suitable for use in the garden and for indoor containers. 5-3-3 organic plant food
1 pound equals approx. 3 cupfuls

Flower Beds: Mix Plant-tone into the top four or five inches of soil at a rate of 4 lbs. per 100 square feet (or 1/2 cup per plant). An additional feeding of 1/4 cup can be made once a month after plants are well established.
Bulbs : Place one heaping teaspoonful of Plant-tone beneath bulb and mix thoroughly with soil. Feed established beds at a rate of 4 lbs. per 100 square feet (or 1 cup per 10 sq. ft.).
Roses : When planting, mix 1 cupful of Plant-tone with soil at the bottom of hole and 1 cupful with soil used to refill hole. For established plants, apply 1 cupful evenly on soil around plant and work lightly into top 1 inch of soil. Repeat monthly during summer months.
Shrubs :When planting, mix 1 cupful with soil in the bottom of the hole and one cupful with the soil used to refill the hole. Feed established shrubs with 1 cupful per foot of branch spread.
Vegetables :When preparing garden, apply 40 lbs. of Plant-tone per 1,000 square feet and work into the top 4 to 5 inches of soil (or 1 cup per 10 sq. ft.). For individual plantings, add 2 tablespoons per vegetable. Apply at same rate once a month during growing season.

Soil Preparation
When preparing tomato bed apply 2 lbs. of Tomato-tone per 50 square feet (or 5 1/2 cups per 50 sq. feet.) and work into the top 4 to 6 inches of soil.

Feeding
Apply 2 tablespoons of Tomato-tone per plant after plants are well established (10 to 14 days) and then twice each month during the growing season.

Quantities
Rows: 1 cup each side per 5 feet of row.
Single Plants: 2 Tablespoons per plant.
Potted Plants: 1 teaspoon per 4 inches of pot diameter (1 tablespoon per 12 inches of pot diameter)

Apply Tomato-tone in a narrow band around single plants or along each side of row. Keep Tomato-tone at least 3 inches away from plant stem.

Potted Plants: Apply evenly over soil area and gently mix in.

Fafard mushroom compost is a naturally organic soil amendment useful for improving any soil type. Adding mushroom compost helps loosen and aerate hard clay soils while providing lift and water retention to sandy soils. Fafard mushroom compost releases nutrients slowly and will not burn tender shoots or roots.

Use this product as a top dressing around newly installed plantings, and also to boost soil condition in older landscapes.

All chemicals used on cotton are required to be bio-degradable within two weeks according to an EPA decree. Beneficial organisms eliminate nearly all remaining trace chemicals during the 4 month compost process. Back To Nature is a member of the United States Compost Council and their products have their "Seal of Testing Assurance". They submit samples several times each year for testing.

There are less chemicals in Back To Nature Composts than exists in nature, according to the company. The product cannot be certified organic because they are produced from an agricultural product, but many certification agencies say that composts with USCC's seal of testing assurance are safe for organic gardening.

The biggest concern for using cotton bur for compost has been arsenic acid, used as a defoliant on cotton for nearly 50 years until the EPA banned it around 12 years ago. And that product has never been used on Texas High Plains cotton, the raw material used in BTN, anyway because early freezes normally act as a defoliant. When chemical defoliant is necessary, sodium chlorate, not arsenic, is the defoliant of choice.

From what we can find, BTN Cotton Bur Compost is as clean or cleaner than the free compost given away by the City of Lawrence each year which is made from private yard waste that is typically more chemically treated by residential users who are not trained or monitored in the application of pesticides and herbicides.

Boric Acid, a white powder, is mined from the Mojave Desert in California. It works very well against insects, but is less toxic to humans and pets than table salt.

Apply directly on carpets and upholstery where pets frequently traffic or sleep at the rate of 1.5 pounds per 150 square feet. Work powder deep into fibers and mat. Any powder visible after application must be brushed into carpet fibers or vacuumed. Allow to remain for a period of three weeks to achieve maximum flea control in carpets. Sprinkle around baseboards, under and behind refrigerator, stove, sink, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. Also, sprinkle into openings around drain pipes and electrical conduits, and in cracks and crevices along baseboards and corners of cabinets, cupboards and closets. Insects walk through the dust, ingest it, and die within hours.

Approved for organic use, Insecticidal Soap is made from naturally occurring plant oils and animal fats. Penetrates the outer shells of soft bodied insect pests. Diatomaceous Earth is the finely ground fossils of prehistoric fresh water diatoms that physically cut up the internal organs of insects killing them relatively quickly while leaving no harmful chemical residue, making this product a good choice for vegetable and herb gardens when pest control is needed. Kills household and garden pests like cockroaches, ants, slugs, fleas, beetles and most other insects within 48 hours of contact. The downside is that beneficial insects are also killed, so use this product only in emergency, like a sudden infestation of squash beetles. Contains less than 0.1% Crystalline Silica. Food grade. OMRI Listed for use in organic production.

Lightly coat a thin layer in areas where these insect pests are found. Repeat treatment as necessary.

Use caution when applying product as powder will harm mucous membranes of the eyes and nose. Wear protective eye wear, mask and gloves when using product.

Kills mosquito larvae for 30 days. Mosquito Dunks have been used for more that a decade and have proven their value in destroying mosquitoes by killing the larvae before they mature into biting adults, but will not harm people, pets, wildlife or fish. Made with Bt-israelensis (Bt-i), a highly specific biological pesticide. Just place wherever water accumulates around your home once a month. If you have a mole infestation or yellowing patches in your lawn, chances are you have an overabundance of Japanese beetle grubs in your soil. Reduce their numbers naturally to protect birds, pets and children who come into contact with the lawn.

The number one Japanese beetle control, Milky Spore ( Bacillus popilliae ) targets and discriminately works to attack the white grubs of Japanese beetles. Spreads naturally as each infected beetle larvae dies, decomposes and releases billions of new spores into the soil. Time must be allowed for this process to completely saturate a treated area, but only one application is required as the disease continues to multiply on its own, as long as larvae are present. When there is no longer a grub infestation, the disease remains dormant, waiting for subsequent populations. Once established in a lawn, Milky Spore has been known to last 15 to 20 years.

Not harmful to beneficial insects, birds, bees, pets or humans.

A self-emulsifying concentrate, Horticultural Oil kills insect eggs and soft bodied adults by smothering them. Works great indoors or out on aphids, whitefly, mites and scale, and can be used as a dormant or growing season spray. Degrades rapidly and has almost no toxicity. Pint concentrate makes 12.5 gallons of spray.

Semaspore Bait contains Nosema locustae , a naturally occurring grasshopper disease. After eating Semaspore grasshoppers become sick, eat less, and begin to die. The disease spreads to healthy grasshoppers through cannibalism. In 2-4 weeks, 50% of the population will die, and most survivors will be infected to continue spreading the disease. Infected survivors eat 75% less than healthy grasshoppers and lay fewer eggs. Apply 1 lb. Semaspore Bait / acre, when grasshoppers are young (1/4" - 1/2" long). Bonide's Thuricide is a liquid formulation of bacteria, Bacillus Thuringiensis (Bt), which is specific to leaf eating caterpillars. Controls loopers, cabbageworms, tomato hornworms, leaf rollers, gypsy moths and many others. The insects stop feeding and die within 2-3 days of ingestion. There is no residue problem, and being exempt from tolerance requirements, this product may be applied at recommended amounts up to the day of harvest. Will not harm beneficial insects. One pint (16 oz.) treats up to 10,875 sq. ft.

Mix 1-4 tsp. per gallon of water and apply at first sign of infestation. Repeat at weekly intervals as needed to maintain control. May be applied by hose or pressurized sprayers. Apply thoroughly to upper and lower leaf surfaces, but not to the point of excessive run-off.
