Hedera

Hedera helix 'Thorndale' (hardy English ivy)

The hardiest evergreen ivy available, 'Thorndale' ivy grows more quickly in shade in rich soil, but will also cover ground in full sun and in poor soil. Climbs up walls and tumbles down over banks creating a deep, dark green foliage cover year round. A wonderful way to camoflauge chain link fence and other less than attractive structures. Makes a great background for brighter foliage and blooms, too. Zone 5


Helenium

Helenium autumnale (Helen's flowers)

Yellow, daisy-like flowers are produced in summer and last through the hot part of the season when few others manage to look fresh! Grows 24-30" tall with a dense habit. Flowers make great cuts, and butterflies are attracted to them. Zone 4

Helenium 'Mardi Gras'

Multi-colored petals of yellow are splashed with orange-red in a tie-dye like patterning. Upright clumps grow to 30" tall and produce their showy 2" flowers from mid to late summer. Zone 4

Helianthus

Helianthus maximilliani (sunflower)

Clusters of bright yellow flowers in September atop 6-8' stalks. An important livestock food source that also feeds birds. Zone 4


Helianthemum

Helianthemum nummularium (sun rose, rock rose)

Famous Lawrence landscape painter Paul Hotvedt turned us on to this cool little xeriscape plant several years ago. Dwarf 6-8" plants are evergreen, and in summer are covered with single blooms in an assortment of colors. Must be planted in well-drained soil. We'll try this one in our green roof garden. Zone 5


Heliopsis

Heliopsis helianthoides 'Summer Sun' (false sunflower)

Bright golden-yellow, double 4" flowers open in late summer and last through fall on stalks that grow 3-5' tall. Full sun perennial with excellent drought tolerance. Attracts butterflies and makes great cut flowers. Zone 4


Heliopsis 'Loraine Sunshine' (variegated false sunflower)


Highly variegated foliage is dark green with heavy cream vein overlay. Large golden-yellow daisy-like blooms open mid summer and continue through frost. Plants grow to 30" in height. An excellent perennial for hot summer color! Zone 3

Heliopsis 'Venus'


4-5" golden-yellow flowers atop 36" stems mid summer through fall. Excellent back of the border perennial that takes the heat! Zone 3

Hellebores

Helleborus x 'Sunshine Strain' (lenton rose)

An evergreen perennial that flowers as early as February with large blooms that often last through May. Flowers are large tulip-shaped blooms of cream that change color from shades of green topink to burgundy as they age. Plants grow 12-18" high and wide and should be planted in a protected area of the shade garden. Helleborus also make wonderful container perennials for fall through early spring display, when they can be planted out into the garden making way for flowering annuals! Zone 5

Hemerocallis 'Bama Music'

Large deep pink blooms have a yellow eye with a green throat. Scapes grow up to 36" high. Zone 3

Hemerocallis 'Barbara Mitchell'

Large, 6" blooms of orchid-pink with lime green throat. on scapes up to 20" tall Petals are lightly ruffled. Excellent rebloomer. Zone 3

Hemerocallis 'Bela Lugosi'

6" blooms of deep, dark purple with a bright lime green throat on scapes up to 33" high. A tetraploid with high bud count and true purple color.that is very sunfast. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Big Smile'

Huge 7" flowers of sunny yellow with a ruffled pink edge on 24" scapes. Tetraploid. A very unusual and beautiful bicolor daylily. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Bo Peep'

Medium-sized, round blooms of salmon pink grow only 12" high. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Chicago Apache'

5" ruffled flowers of fiery hot scarlet with green throats on 30" scapes. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Ed Murray'

Petals of dark velvety red with yellow-green throat and yellow ribs top 30" scapes. Very striking dark color. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Eenie Weenie'

Our smallest daylily, growing only 10" tall with 2" flowers of bright yellow on compact foliage. Deadheading will promote reblooming throughout summre. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Eleonore'

An early to mid season bloomer with large 6" lavender-blue ruffled blooms and green throat. Semi-evergreen foliage on tetraploid plants that rebloom. Very stiking and unusual color. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Enjoy'

Lavender and pale yellow bicolor blooms open to 6" across and make wonderful companions to 'Moonbeam' coreopsis, 'Blue Queen' salvia and other yellow and purple perennials. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Fairy Tale Pink'

A dependable classic, 5-6" ruffled pale pink blooms top 24-30" scapes for an extended bloom period. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Fires of Fuji'

Deep red fully double blooms 5" across top 30" scapes. Nice deep color is very striking planted with yellow or white perennials. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Forty Second Street'

Very unique double bicolor blooms of coral pink with rose-red eyes and cahrtruese centers. Reblooms. Zone 3
Hemerocallis fulva (tawny or roadside daylily)

Standard old-fashioned orange daylily often seen naturalized along roadsides. This fast spreader makes a great erosion control or no maintenance planting for steep slopes where turf is dangerous to mow! Foliage grows 24" and is topped by 30-36" tall flower scapes. Some flowers are double. The most shade tolerant of the daylilies, these naturalizers will bloom even when limited to a couple hours of sun each day. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Gordon Biggs'

Each ruffled raspberry-red bloom has a dark pink central ring on scapes up to 24" tall. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Happy Returns'

Light yellow fragrant blooms 3" across appear almost continuously all summer. Flowers are lightly ruffled and top scapes that grow up to 18" high. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Hyperion'

Another reliable oldie-but-goodie, Hyperion flowers open bright lemon yellow 5-6" across atop 35-40" scapes. A wonderful tall daylily, we like this one since we can hide the foliage behind lower growing perennials and evergreen shrubs. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Ice Carnival'

Still the best near-white daylily with green throat on scapes growing to 28" high. Wonderful planted with tall Verbena bonariensis. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Little Grapette'

Compact plants top out at 12" with loads of 2" miniature grape-purple blooms that are ruffled around their edges. A nice color for a compact. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Magic Dawn'

A very stiking bicolor with petals alternating deep red and lime green. Blooms open to about 5" across on tall scapes that grow up to 35" tall. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Mary Todd'

An early blooming daylily with 6" lightly ruffled yellow blooms on scapes to 26" tall. Another old reliable. Zone 3

Hemerocallis 'May Colvin'

This rose-pink, tetraploid daylily has a green throat blooming from mid-July until late August. Blooms stay open for at least 16 hours per day. Flower scapes to 29". Zone 3

Hemerocallis 'Mini Pearl'

Pale melon-pink blooms with butter-yellow stamens. A long bloomer with a high bud count, petals are lightly ruffled and scapes grow to only 16". Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Prairie Blue Eyes'

5" lavender flowers with blue eye and purple veining are slightly ruffled on scapes to 18". We always get comments on this one! Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Purple 'd' Oro'

3" purple flowers on short, 20" tall, reblooming daylily. Reddish-purple petals with darker purple veins Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Ruby Stella'

3" vibrant ruby-red blooms are slightly fragrant. This extended bloomer is a great compliment to 'Stella 'd' Oro', groing to 18". Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Spellbinder'

Early to bloom with high bud count means fabulous 7" radiant golden orange flowers well into summer on scapes to 34" tall. One of our very favorite daylilies. Zone 3
Hemerocallis 'Stella 'd' Oro'

The most popular everblooming daylily, with 3" fragrant flowers of golden-yellow topping scapes to 15" tall. Zone 3

Hellebores

Hepatica Americana (liverleaf)

White, lavender, pink or blue flowers in spring over heart-shaped, evergreen leaves with three pointed lobes. Shady woodland native grows to 6" and usually goes dormant by early summer.


Hesperis

Hesperis matronalis (Dame's rocket)

Showy purple flower clusters that resemble phlox bloom spring to midsummer. Easy to grow in any soil condions, these perennials will self-sow and spread around your garden. Plants grow 20-30" tall in full sun to partial shade. Zone 4


Heuchera

Heuchera micrantha 'Palace Purple' (coral bells)

Dark reddish-purple foliage with small white flowers atop tall spires from late spring to July. An excellent plant for contrasting foliages. 1991 Plant of the Year! Plants grow 18-20" tall and wide in ideal conditions. Part sun to shade. Zone 4

Heuchera sanguinea 'Bressingham Hybrids' (coral bells)

Heart-shaped leaves in mounding form with bell-shaped crimson flowers rising above on wiry stems from late spring to July. Best in rich, well-drained soil. Plants grow 18-20" tall and wide in ideal conditions. Part sun to shade. Zone 3
Heuchera 'Amber Waves' (coral bells)

Amber and gold foliage topped with rose-peach buds opening to creamy-white flowers. Excellent contrast foliage for the shade garden. Plants grow to 12" high. Zone 4
Heuchera 'Chocolate Ruffles' (coral bells)

Very ruffled, chocolate purple foliage grows in clumps to 10", topped with small creamy-white flowers on purple stems. Zone 3
Heuchera 'Frosted Violet' (coral bells)

Large growing to 20" high and 30" across with plum-purple foliage that intensifies in fall. Fine hairs over leaves give them a frosted appearance. Pink flowers. Zone 4
Heuchera 'Green Spice' (coral bells)

Very hardy and vigorous with large dark green leaves heavily veined with dark purple lines and overlaid with silver frost. White flower sprays. One of our favorites, plants grow 10-12". Zone 3
Heuchera 'Lime Rickey' (coral bells)

Bright little plant with lemon, lime and chartruese leaves lightly ruffled on edges and topped with white flowers on bright green stems. Plants grow to 10" Zone 3
Heuchera 'Obsidian' (coral bells)

The blackest Heuchera you can get, with sprays of white flowers in early summer. Plants grow 10-12". Zone 3
Heuchera 'Peach Flambe' (coral bells)

Warm, peachy red-orange foliage almost glows. Great contrast perennial, and worthy of a container in a highly visible spot! Plants grow 7-9" with a spread of 16" and burst with bright white, airy flowers in early summer. Fall color mellows to purple. Zone 3
Heuchera 'Sparkling Burgundy' (coral bells)

Bright burgundy leaves mature to a mottled purple, growing to 7" tall with a spread of 16". Bright white flowers on purple stems. Zone 3
Heuchera villosa 'Caramel' (coral bells)

Vibrant yellow-orange leaves have purple-red undersides. Cream colored flowers. Good heat tolerance. Plants grow 6" tall with a spread of 15". Zone 3

Heucherella

Heucherella 'Stoplight'

Brilliant glowing yellow leaves with a large dark red center blotch is topped with white flowers in spring and early summer. A wonderful contrast plant for the shade garden. Plants grow 6" tall and 12" across. Zone 4


Hibiscus
Hibiscus moscheutos 'Kopper King'

Gigantic 12" wide flowers are white with a red eye that bleeds out of the center in veins. Slightly ruffled petals are backed with copper-bronze foliage that really sets off the flowers when in bloom, and also contrast other garden foliage when not in bloom. Plants grow 3-4' high with a spread of 3-5'. Hardy hibisuc are very late to break dormancy in spring, so be patient! Zone 4
Hibiscus moscheutos 'Lord Baltimore'

Huge, 10" ruffled red flowers open in summer and never stop until frost. This outstanding cultivar grows 4-5' tall in our roadside garden with little attention from us except to "ooooh" and "ahhhh" as we pass by each day! Wonderful planted with grasses and evergreen for a low-maintenance, showy garden area. Zone 4
Hibiscus moscheutos 'Plum Crazy'

Dinner-plate blooms up to 10" across open lavender-plum with purple veining and a deep magenta-purple center eye. Plum colored foliage resembles maple leaves. Pretty even when not in bloom. Zone 4

Hieracium
Hieracium auranticum (devil's paintbrush, hawkweed)

Orange-red native wildflower also called devil's paintbrush has hairy, low foliage rosettes that produce 1' flower stalks. Drought tolerant rock garden perennial hardy that works well as a green roof plant. Zone 4.

Hosta 'Faithful Heart'

Light gold center with green margin on leaves growing 2" wide by 4" long. Zone 4

Hosta 'Lakeside Babyface'

Dark green 2 1/2" wide x 3" long leaves have a white margin. Zone 4
Hosta 'Peanut'

Creamy-white leaves 2 3/4" wide x 4" long have a streaky, dark green edging. Zone 4
Hosta 'Teaspoon'

Medium green rounded, cup-shape leaves are 2 1/4" wide by 2 3/4" long. Zone 4
Small (7-10")
Hosta 'Gold Drop'

Heart-shaped bright yellow-gold foliage forms a small, tight clump to 10". Small flower scape with white flowers grow to 14". An excellent edger. Slightly sun tolerant. Zone 4
Hosta 'Island Charm'

A perfect edger, this little hosta sports flat, broad leaves of white with dark green edges. In very dense shade white can turn pale yellow. Foliage mounds grow only 10", and pale purple flowers grow atop reddish-pink scapes to 21", followed by pink seedpods. Zone 4

Medium (11-18")

Hosta 'Allan P. McConnell'

Small, dark green oval leaves are edged in white margins and form compact mounds that grow to 12". Lavender flowers grow on scapes to 16" tall in early to mid summer. Sun tolerant. Zone 4
Hosta 'Dream Queen'

A sport of 'Great Expectations' with large, nearly round leaves of bluish-green with a creamy-white center that are corrugated in texture and form clumps up to 18". White flowers open in mid summer on scapes to 26". Zone 4
Hosta 'Francee'

Dark green, glossy leaves have a narrow white margin and form 14" clumps. A perfect edger with lavender flowers on scapes to 30" in mid summer. Zone 4
Hosta 'Hadspen Blue'

Slightly cup-shaped steel blue leaves have heavy substance and excellent slug resistance, forming 14" mounds. Pale lavender flowers on scapes to 18" in mid summer. Zone 4
Hosta 'Minute Man'

Dark green, cup-shaped leaves are widely edged in pure white margins and form 18" mounds. Pale lavender flowers in early to mid summer grow on scapes to 24" high. Zone 4
Hosta 'Pineapple Upside Down Cake'

This distinctive hosta has great color and texture, with leaves of green that develop a yellow center with a narrow green margin. Clumps grow to 15" high but get quite wide. Lavender flowers open late summer on 28" scapes. Zone 4

Large (19-28")

Hosta 'August Moon'

Brilliant gold folaige is sun tolerant and slug resistant. Leaves are corrugated, growing to 20" high. Flowers are pale lavender and grow on scapes 24" tall. Zone 4
Hosta 'Bressingham Blue'

Puckered leaves are blue-green with undulating margins and form 24" mounds. White bell-shaped flowers appear on scapes to 36" high in mid summer. Zone 4
Hosta 'Fire and Ice'

Heart-shaped white leaves are edged with a wide, dark green margin forming 20" mounds. Pale lavender scapes to 26". Zone 4
Hosta 'Fortunei 'Hyacintha'

An excellent mass planting specimen for groundcover, broad, heart-shaped leaves are grey-green on top with glaucous blue undersides and form 23" mounds with excellent slug resistance. Pale lavender flowers in mid summer grow up to 30". Zone 4
Hosta 'Fragrant Bouquet'

Wide apple-green leaves are edged in pale yellow. 20" mounds look alive with wavy foliage and ar topped with almost white flowers on 36" scapes in mid summer.
Hosta 'Frances Williams'

Giant blue-green leaves have a very wide chartruese to yellow edging. Leaves are leathery, sear-suckered and slug-resistant, growing in clumps to 22". White flowers atop scapes to 30" in mid summer. Sun tolerant. Zone 4
Hosta 'Guacamole'

Huge apple green leaves have dark green margins with brighter leaf centers in summer. Mounds of foliage grow to 22", with fragrant white flowers atop scapes to 36" in late summer. Zone 4
Hosta 'Gold Standard'

Light green leaves with dark green margins turn gold by summer, with mounds of 20". Pale lavender flowers on scapes to 30" in mid summer. Zone 4
Hosta 'Honeybells'

Long, light green, wavy leaves are sun tolerant and glossy. Mounds grow up to 22", and lilac-lavender flowers open in late summer on 40" scapes, attracting honeybees and hummingbirds like magnets. Zone 4
Hosta 'Love Pat'

Very blue, cup-shaped leaves are heavily puckered and grow in upright mounds up to 26". Pale lavender flowers grow on 32" scapes in mid summer. Zone 4
Hosta 'Patriot'

Dark green leaves have a crisp white margin. These sun tolerant hostas grow in 22" mounds with lavender flowers in mid summer atop 30" scapes. Zone 4
Hosta 'Paul's Glory'

Blue-green leaves have a chartruese center that brightens in summer. Mounds of foliage to 25", with 40" flower scapes topped with pale lavender flowers in mid summer. Zone 4

Hosta plantigenea

Medium to large oval, pale green leaves form 24" mounds that are sun tolerant. White flowers open in late summer on 30" scapes. Zone 4
Hosta 'Royal Standard'

Large mounds of wavy, glossy green foliage to 26" high with large white fragrant flowers opening in late summer atop 35-40" scapes. The most sun and drought tolerant hosta available! Zone 4
Hosta seiboldiana 'Elegans'

Huge blue-grey leaves grow 10" x 9" and are heavily corrugated as they age. Highly slug resistant, foliage mounds grow to 20" and white flowers on 34" scapes open in mid summer. Light sunlight will imporve blue color. Zone 4
Hosta 'Striptease'

Wide, dark green margins surround a golden center occasionally streaked with a line of white. Foliage grows to 20", and pale violet flowers open in mid to late summer on 30" scapes. Zone 4
Hosta 'Sum and Substance'

Bright golden yellow leaves are wazy and puckered, and color is brightest with some sun. Vase-shaped habit, mounds of foliage grow to 24". Pale lavender flowers scapes grow to 40" Zone 4
Giant (29" and up)
Hosta 'Blue Angel'

Large blue-green leaves form a huge mound and are topped with white flowers on 48" scapes. Mounds grow up to 36" high. Excellent slug resistance. Zone 4
Hosta Blue Umbrellas'

Huge blue leaves turn downward like umbrellas. Color darkens with age, and pale lavender flowers on scapes to 40" appear in mid summer over the foliage mounds up to 32" high. Excellent slug resistant cultivar. Zone 4
Hosta 'Krossa Regal'

Frosted blue leaves grow in a vase-like habit and are sun tolerant, forming mounds up to 40". Lavender flowers grow 48-72" high in mid summer! Zone4
Hosta 'Regal Splendor'

This 'Krossa Regal' sport shows it's ancestry with its vase-shaped habit. Frosty blue leaves have a wavy, narrow, creamy yellow margin. Plants grow to 36", with lavender flowers on 60-72" scapes in mid to late summer. Zone 4

Houttynia

Houttynia cordata 'Chameleon'

This attractive Korean groundcover has beautiful heart-shaped foliage of bright green, white and pink. Easy to grow, this plant flowers in summer with small white star-shaped blooms. We use it in containers, as well as garden beds. It's drought tolerant, but also grows in water! Plants grow 12-15" tall and spread like groundcover. Zone 5
