Iberis

Iberis sempervirens (evergreen candytuft)

Useful in rock gardens or as edging, the foliage is narrow and evergreen. Flowers of white in flat clusters on compact plant. Likes well-drained soil. Zone 3


Ipomopsis

Ipomopsis aggregata (scarlet rocket)

Another heirloom garden plant that crosses over from the native plant list. Showy, intense red tubular flowers on 6' spikes in July and August make a splash in the heat of summer. Biennial plants can be treated the same way hollyhocks are grown, allowing plants to self seed and spread. Fine, ferny foliage is also attractive. Zone 5


Iris

Iris cristata (dwarf crested iris)

Very dwarf plants grow only 6" tall and produce blue flowers in early spring. Foliage makes a nice contrast, and plants are drought tolerant. Plant in sun to part shade. Can be divided every few years. Zone 3

Iris ensata 'Variegata' (Japanese variegated)

Blooms mid summer, after other iris have finished. Flowers open in a color range of purple, blue and burgundy atop 36" stems. This variety has foliage stiped in yellow. Zone 4
Iris pallida (zebra)

A very unique addition to the landscape, the flowers are delicate lavender-blue in early summer. Variegated foliage is green with creamy stripes, and adds to the garden even when not in bloom! 24-30" tall. Zone 4

Iris siberica 'Ceasar's Brother' (Siberian)

Blooms after bearded iris and tolerates boggy conditions. Dark purple blooms atop 36-42" stems. Zone 3
Iris siberica 'Butter and Sugar'

Blooms after bearded iris and tolerates boggy conditions. Creamy white standards are surrounded by butter yellow falls. Sometimes reblooms in fall.. 28" tall. Zone 3
Iris siberica 'White Swirl'

Blooms after bearded iris and tolerates boggy conditions. This is the best white, opening atop 30" stems. Zone 3
Iris 'Batik' (German bearded)

Large pruple, frilly blooms streaked and spattered with white flecks. 35" tall. Zone 4
Iris 'Before the Storm' (German bearded)

One of the darkest purple-blacks available, this variety has smooth, tailored blooms with flaring falls. Late bloomer with a lovely fragrance. 37" tall. Zone 4
Iris 'Betsy Boo' (dwarf)

Light blue flowers on 10-12" stems. Zone 4
Iris 'Breakers' (German bearded rebloomer)

Medium bloom blooms with 8-10 buds per stem, AND it reblooms! 37" tall. Zone 4
Iris 'Candy Apple' (dwarf)

Pale pink blooms top 10-12" stems. Zone 4
Iris 'Firebreather' (German bearded)

Yellow-orange, ruffled blooms on 25-32" tall stems. Unusual color. Hard to find. Zone 4
Iris 'Funny Girl' (German bearded)

Ruffly deep pink variety has fiery red beards and well-branched stalks. A mid to late season bloomer. 38" tall. Zone 4
Iris 'Immortality' (German bearded rebloomer)

This pure white iris has light, lemon yellow beards. It is a vigorous grower with an excellent reblooming record, has a lovely fragrance, and blooms midseason. 29" tall. Zone 4
Iris 'Rave On' (German bearded)

Tangerine orange blooms and beards. 35" tall. Zone 4
Iris 'Red at Night' (German bearded)

Dark red, velvety flowers have yellow beards tipped with red. It is well-branched and blooms are mildly ruffled. An early to midseason bloomer. 38" tall. Zone 4
Iris 'Sarah Taylor' (dwarf)

Yellow and pale blue bicolor blooms open on 10-12" stems. Very pretty dwarf iris. Zone 4
Iris 'Strike it Rich' (German bearded)

Clear yellow, ruffled blooms on 35" tall stems. Zone 4
Iris 'Summer Olympics' (German bearded rebloomer)

Yellow fades to white at center of standards, surrounded by yellow falls. An early variety that reblooms. 31" tall. Zone 4

Kalimeris

Kalimeris yomena 'Variegata'

Gold and white variegation on green, aster-like foliage groing in a dense, rounded mound to 18-24". Covered with small lavender daisies July through September. Zone 4


Knautia

Knautia macedonia 'Mars Midget'

A profusion of brilliant ruby-red flowers June til frost on compact dwarf plants that grow to 16" Great for butterflies and cut flower arrangements. Zone 5


Kniphofia

Kniphofia uvaria 'Flamenco' (red hot pokers)

This South African native has showy, unusual 8" flower spikes of red and yellow, creamy-white, orange-red and red growing to 30" tall. Great cut flowers, they make an exotic, tropical look in the flower garden, and are easy to grow. Zone 5


Krascheninnikovia

Krascheninnikovia lanata (winter fat)
This western US native plant can be used as a shrub as a soft, silver-gray accent. Plants provide winter interest, and grow to a height and spread of 2'. Found in western half of the US, north into Canada and south into Mexico, it's cold and heat hardy and drought tolerant. Zone 4
