Ranunculus

Ranunculus repens 'Buttered Popcorn' (variegated buttercup)

Yellow and green variegated foliage loves partial shade and thrives in moisture retentive soil. Plants grow 10-15" tall and spread vigorously. Small yellow flowers appear sporadically. Zone 3


Ratibida
Ratibida columnifera (Mexican hats)

Round, dense, fine foliage is covered with 1" blooms of yellow, red and bicolor flowers with petals drooping back from the center cone. A wonderful self-seeder, this native blooms from late spring until fall, and even grows in the gravel at Vinland Valley Nursery! Zone 4

Rudbeckia
Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm' (black-eyed Susan)

Large golden-yellow daisy-like flowers have a bronzy-black center and open open nicely formed, dense 24" plants. Very hardy and compact. Excellent butterfly nectar plant. Zone 3
Rudbeckia hirta 'Indian Summer'

Huge 3-4" deep yellow blooms with dark brown eye cover this black-eyed Susan from late spring until frost in an exuberant show. A rampant self-seeder, one plant will quickly become many in the garden. We leave ours to dry and provide bird seed in winter. Plants grow 30-36" tall and tolerate a small amount of shade. Excellent butterfly nectar plant. Zone 5
Rudbeckia hirta 'Cherokee Sunset'

A blend of colors, including golden-yellow, orange, bronze and mahogany double and semi-double blooms in summer through frost. Can be short-lived, but self-seeds in the garden. Plants grow to 24". Excellent butterfly nectar plant. Zone 5
Rudbeckia maxima

This incredible wildflower grows 5-7' tall with glaucous leaves to 10". Flowers have 4-6" cones surrounded with bright yellow petals. Excellent wildlife food source, and nice back of the border plant. Excellent butterfly nectar plant. Zone 5

Ruellia
Ruellia humilis (wild petunia)

Delicate-looking pale lavender flowers cover this 1-2' native plant all summer. The bloom color compliments many other plants. Thrives in full sun even in dry conditions, and will self-seed freely. Another gravel-grower here at the nursery! Zone 5

Sagina

Sagina subulata (Irish moss)

2-4" green moss creates an evergreen mat in shady areas, and can be ground between pavers and rocks with beautiful effect. Tiny white flowers in summer. Zone 5

Sagina subulata 'Aurea' (Scotch moss)

2-4" yellow-green moss creates an evergreen mat in shady areas, and can be ground between pavers. Try mixing it with the green Sagina subulata for an interesting two-tone effect. Tiny white flowers in summer. Zone 5

Salvia
Salvia azurea subspecies pitcherii 'Nekan'

Native selection with 4' blue flower spikes in late summer. Fantastic with tall native Rudbeckias and grasses. Zone 4
Salvia greggii 'Furman's Red'

Crimson and scarlet flower spikes open throughout the summer and into fall on this hardy, southwestern everblooming sage. Plants grow 18-24" high and benefit from being cut back in spring. Zone 5
Salvia lyrata 'Purple Knockout'

Wide foliage is dark purple and bronze with red stems. Blooms of blue-purple grow 16" tall. Zone 5
Salvia nemorosa 'Blue Queen'

Blue flowers on spikes growing 15-18" tall cover this dense, mounding perennial in summer. Will rebloom if deadheaded. Nice edger for formal garden designs. Zone 4
Salvia nemorosa 'Marcus'

Deep purple-blue flower spikes grow only 12" tall in June and July. Zone 4

Sanguinaria

Sanguinaria Canadensis (bloodroot)

Choice native woodland plant that grows 6-12" tall with waxy, white flowers in early spring. Goes dormant in summer. Zone 4


Saponaria
Saponaria x lempergii 'Max Frei'

Bright pink flowers in masses all summer. Blue-green foliage forms the 8" mat beneath. An underused plant that's easy to grow and very showy for an extended season. Zone 4
 Saponaria oxymoides (soapwort)

Bright pink flowers cover this low-growing 10" tall perennial from late spring through summer. Very showy, and a fantastic choice for cascading over walls and rocks. A fine choice for the green roof garden as well. Zone 2

Scabiosa
Scabiosa columbaria 'Butterfly Blue' (pincushion flower)

This is one of the few perennials you'll see still blooming after the intnse heat of summer. This cultivar sports lavender-blue flowers on 12-18" tall plants. Zone 5
Scabiosa columbaria 'Misty Butterflies' (pincushion flower)

This cultivar sports large soft pink flowers on compact 10" tall plants. Zone 5/6
Scabiosa columbaria 'Pink Lemonade' (pincushion flower)

This cultivar sports pink flowers on 12-18" tall plants. Zone 5

Scutellaria
Scutellaria alpina 'Arcobaleno' (rainbow skull cap)

This Asian medicinal herb grows to 12" tall and is covered with blue, violet, white, pink, yellow and bicolor blooms. Zone 4
Scutellaria resinosa 'Smoky Hills' (skull cap)

Deep blue flowers are tipped with white patches and are produced from May until frost. Really! Finely textured and low-growing, this little plant doesn't shy in the heat or wilt with drought. It's a fine plant for edging, or for planters. Grows to 12" high. Our best new find of 2006. Zone 4

Sedum (low, spreading varieties)
Sedum album 'Murale'

Light, pale pink flowers on 4" tall, spreading plants with green foliage that turns to red during cold weather and periods of stress. Zone 5
Sedum dasyphyllum 'Himalayan Skies'

Very showy dasyphyllum that grows to only 2" tall. Very tiny, glaucus blue foliage is very finely textured. Wonderful drought tolerant groundcover that contrasts color and texture under other perennials and grasses. Zone 4/5
Sedum ewersii

Pink flowers last a long time over 3" blue succulent foliage. Zone 4
Sedum hispanicum

Super-fine blue foliage with white flowers mid summer. Foliage follows the curve of the growing area, tumbling over edges. Zone 5
Sedum kamtschatisum var. middendorffianum

Narrow green foliage is edged in white variegation. Grows just 8" tall and is topped with yellow flowers in mid summer. Zone 3
Sedum pachyclados

Blue-green foliage is lightly serated around top curve, and foliage radiates around stem. Pin flowers in late spring on 3" tall growing, spreading groundcover. Foliage is tinged with pink in cold weather. Zone 5
Sedum pulchelum

Dense green foliage is covered with arching pink spires of pink flowers in late spring through summer. This sedum is shade and bog tolerant. Grows to 8" high. Zone 4
Sedum rupestre 'Angelina'

Thin, spiny golden-yellow foliage radiates around central stem and is tinged russet orange at ends. Makes a great cascading foliage in containers and along wall edges. Nice color contrast. Zone 3
Sedum rupestre 'Blue Spruce'

Thin, spiny bluefoliage radiates around central stem cascades over container sides and along wall edges. Zone 3
Sedum sexangulare

4" mat of very fine green foliage is covered with yellow flowers in mid summer. Zone 3
Sedum sichotense

Flat tapering leaves are serrated, growing to 4" tall and covered with bright yellow blooms through summer. Foliage turns brilliant burgundy-red in fall. Zone 4
Sedum spurium 'John Creech'

Dwarf selection from China has blue-green overlapping leaves that form 4" tall mats covered with pink flowers. Zone 3
Sedum spurium 'Voodoo'

Darkest red fall and winter foliage with blood red flowers in summer. Plants grow up to 6" tall, and this cultivar is an improved spurium taking the place of 'Dragon's Blood'. Native to Armenia and northern Iran. Zone 3

Sedum alboroseum 'Mediovariegatum'

Green and cream variegated foliage is folded and tight, covered with pale pink flowers in summer. Plants grow 15-18" tall. Zone 4
Sedum 'Frosty Morn'

This Japanese upright sedum sports large round green leaves edged in white. In cooler weather flowers open light pink. In hot weather, they'll be white. Zone 4
Sedum ''Herbstfreude' (Autumn Joy)

Large salmon-pink flower heads are tinged with bronze and open late summer through fall. Plants grow 18-24" tall. The best known upright sedum. Zone 4
Sedum 'Matrona'

15" tall plants have blue-green leaves edged in rose on reddish stems. Pink flowers open in late summer and early fall. Zone 4
Sedum 'Purple Emporer'

Dusty red blooms late summer through fall over deep purple foliage growing to 15" tall. A beautiful and care free contrast plant. Zone 3
Sedum 'Ruby Glow

10" tall plants with blue-green foliage are covered with fucshia-pink flowers in late summer. Very bright and showy. Zone 4
Sedum 'Vera Jameson'

Deep purple leaves are topped with dusty pink flowers in late summer and fall. Plants groq 9-12" high. Zone 4

Sempervivens
Sempervivens (hens 'n' chicks)

"Little chicks" cluster around the larger rosette "hen" making perfect little rock garden perennials that can grow in the poorest soil with little moister or attention. We offer a mix of many cultivars respresenting a range of colors and textures. Wonderful in strawberry pots, rock gardens and green roof plantings. Zone 4

Senna

Senna hebecarpa (wild senna, cassia)

Round, pea-like foliage on 4-6' tall plants with dark yellow, pea-like blooms in summer. We love this plant! It doesn't wilt, doesn't seem picky about soil type and it provides height for the shade garden. Part to full shade. Zone 4


Seselia
Seseli gummiferum (moon carrot)

Fine, ferny silver rosettes 8-10" tall are topped on 15" stems with umbells of small dusty pink flowers that make great cuts. Excellent contrast perennial, foliage also has a nice bronze-pink fall color. Zone 5

Sidalcea
Sidalcea 'Partygirl Pink' (false mallow)

Carmine-rose flowers open along 24" spikes in summer. It's showy, it's easy to grow and it's fun! Zone 4

Silene

Silene uniflora 'Druett's Variegated' (variegated campion)

Pure white blooms open summer through fall on dark green, cream-edged foliage that grows in a low-growing mat to 3-4" high. Zone 3


Silphium
Silphium lacinata (compass plant)

Slow-growing, very long-lived native plant with 4-7' flower stalks with up to 100 bright yellow flowers opening over a month-long period. This classic prairie plant makes a fantastic single specimen, or can be dotted throughout a native grass planting with wonderful effect. Zone 4

Smilacina

Smilacina racemosa (false Solomon's seal)

White flowers followed by red fruit on arching stems to 3' tall. Very similar looking to Polygonatum biflorum. Zone 4



Solidago
Solidago (goldenrod)

Compact, upright plants grow only 18" tall and produce dense, golden-yellow flower plumes in late summer and fall.


Sphaeralcea
Sphaeralcea coccinea (red false mallow)

This low-growing native is covered with coral-red flowers in summer. A Lewis & Clark discovery, this plant tolerates poor soil, heat and drought. Zone 5
Sphaeralcea 'Desert Sunset'

This western sub-shrub grows 3-4' tall with silvery-gray foliage covered in summer and fall with arching stems of fragrant blooms. Flower colors range from pinks, rusty oranges, salmons, rusty reds, lilacs and violets on separate plants. Prefers dry site. Zone 5

Stachys
Stachys byzantina (lamb's ears)

Soft, thick, wooly silver foliage stays low to the ground. 12-15" flower stalks emerge in summer and are covered with dark purple flowers. Stalks can be cut off where plants are used as edging. Foliage persists well into winter, and plants spread vigorously. Wonderful color and texture contrast plant. Zone 4
Stachys monnieri (betony)

10-20" tall plants have crisp green puckered leaves forming a mound from which spikes of lavender-rose emerge in mid summer. Such a pretty plant, and one of our favorite new additions of the 2006 season. Zone 4

Stanleya pinnata (prince's plume)

Fantastic yellow flower spikes grow 2-4' tall in summer. Native to Kansas, Nebraska, Montana and the Dakotas, this plant prefers dry sites and is a wonderful native substitute for foxtail lily. Zone 4

Stokesia
Stokesia laevis (Stoke's aster)

Lilac-blue discs on 20" plants open from mid summer through frost. Wonderfully hardy and adaptable plants. Native to the southeastern US. Zone 5
