Aesculus parviflora (bottlebrush buckeye)
Wonderful large growing native understory shrub with dark glossy green foliage of five and seven lobes covered in white upright flower panicles in early summer. A broadly mounding habit, shrubs will also sucker from the ground spreading to 8-15' across and 8-12' tall. Prefers moist, well-drained soil but is highly adaptable. Foliage turns yellow in fall. Zone 4
Aesculus pavia (red buckeye)
This woodland native is beautiful in mass under pines and other large shade trees. Dark green foliage has five to seven lobes, and is topped with red flower panicles in April and May. Prefers moisture retentive soils and can grow 15-20' high and wide. Zone 4
 Amelanchier canadensis (Shadblow serviceberry)
Occurring naturally in bogs and along stream beds in the east, this large, multi-stemmed shrub works well in drier soils as well. Mature size is variable depending on where it is planted, growing from 6-20' in height with a dome-shaped habit. White flowers are followed by edible fruits. Zone 3-7
 Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima' (chokeberry)
Excellent for mass plantings and borders, this shrub blooms in May with white flowers. In fall, bright red berries appear and last well into winter. Partial shade (afternoon is best) makes this plant easier to establish, and the Pagoda seems to us to be easier to grow than Cornus florida. Grows 15-20' tall and wide. Zone 3-7

Bare branches are covered with deep rose-purple blooms in early spring. Bright red fruit follow. This shrub can get leggy, so works well as a background to low-growing shrubs or perennials. Grows 3-5' tall and wide. Zone 4-6

Dense, erect habit with gracefully arching branches an bright green foliage. Very showy white flowers in late spring. Small shrubs grow 2-3' tall and around in shade to light morning sun (eastern exposure). Zone 4-8

 Disanthus cercidifolius (redbud hazel)
A very rare, hard to find member of the witchhazel family with heart-shaped leaves resembling redbud of dark bluish-green. Fall is when this bush really shines, with colors ranging from wine-red to purple with orange undertones and interesting dark purple flowers in October. Prefers moist, well drained, acid soil in light shade, though it will grow in full sun in proper soil with attention to watering during hot, dry months. This native of Japan grows 6-10' tall and wide. Zone 4-7
 Euonymus alatus 'Compactus' (dwarf buring bush)
Also called 'winged euonymous,' this gracefully layered shrub gives brilliant fall color for which it is named. Gives best color in sun, but can be planted in partial shade with good results. Although they are called "dwarf," shrubs grow 6-8' tall and 4-6' wide. Zone 4-8

A low-growing, deciduous evergreen with small round leaves of green edged with white. Wonderful in the landscape, especially lending itself to winter interest in perennial beds. Grows 2-3' tall and around when clipped, or can be left prostrate as a groundcover. Plant in sun to light shade. Zone 4

This copiously blooming shrub is one of the earliest heralds of spring. Each gracefully arching branch is covered with yellow flowers. Shrubs grow 6-8' tall and waround in sun or shade (bloom is not as copious in shadier areas). Zone 4-8
 Fothergilla major 'Mt. Airy'
Large 2" white flowers and excellent yellow, orange and red fall color make this a shrub with wonderful ornamental value. Blue-green foliage is attractive all summer. Grow them like a Rhododendron, with rich, well-drained acid soil in part shade (afternoon shade is a must!). Grows 5-6' tall and wide. Zone 4-8
Franklinia alatamaha
Another rare, hard to find plant that can be grown as a large shrub or small tree form. Originally found in Georgia in the late 18th century, it has virtually disappeared from the wild and now exists only in cultivation. With upright, airy branches and 5-6" long leaves that turn orange and red in fall, the 3" white flowers (resembling mockorange blooms) opening in late summer are an added surprise to this wonderful plant. Prefers moist, well drained, acid soil for best results. Grows 10-20' tall and 6-15' wide. Zone 5-8
 Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane'
Flowering in January and February before foliage emerges, these large shrubs create color during the drab days of late winter. This hybrid has red flowers persist for a month or more, and are fragrant. Excellent when grown with an evergreen groundcover beneath. In Kansas, shrubs should be grown in part shade (afternoon shade) for best results. Grows 10-12' tall with a spread of 6-8'. Zone 5-8

This native shrub produces fringey yellow flowers in winter, and can be grown as a large shrub or small understory tree. Foliage turns yellow in fall. Grows 12-15' tall and wide. Zone 3-8
 Heptocodium miconoides (seven-son-flower)
Large 3-4" long leaves persist into November, and white flower panicles emerge in August through October. In October and November, the flower sepals turn a reddish hue, and persist into winter. Grows best in moist soil, where it can grow 10-20' tall. Plant in partial shade (afternoon protection from heat is essential in our area). Zone 4-8
 Hibiscus syriacus (althea, rose of Sharon)
These large growing deciduous shrubs are an heirloom garden staple! Growing 8-12' tall and 5-8' across, they can be pruned regularly to fit a smaller space. Large, show blooms emerge in the heat of summer when spring bloomers have passed and fall plants have yet to begin their show. 'Aphrodite' is pink, 'Blue Marlin' is a medium blue single and 'Diana' is pure white with a deep red eye. Plant in full sun to part shade. Zone 4
 Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' (smooth hydrangea)
An heirloom hydrangea that perfroms well even in baking hot conditions! Huge snowball-shaped blooms emerge in mid-summer, fading to green and persisting into fall. This selection from a native shrub will grow best in well-drained acid soils, but we've had great luck with it just about anywhere. Grows 3-5' tall and wide. Zone 3-8

Huge 6-10" white snowball-like blooms in summer can be dried. Shrubs grow 4-6' tall. Zone 3
 Hydrangea macrophylla 'Nikko Blue'
Showy, globe-shaped clusters of blue flowers bloom June to August. Blue bloom color is best in acid soils. In less than ideal soil, flower color may turn pink. Use blooms in dried flower arrangements. Shrubs grow 3-4' tall and wide in morning sun only. These bushes need lots of supplemental watering during the hot dry summer! Zone 5-9

 Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora' (Peegee hydrangea)
Valued for its vigor and longevity of blooming period, this shrub's 6-8" long, panicle-shaped, white flowers open in July and August. This is one of the hardiest hydrangeas. Large shrubs grow to 15' tall and wide in sun or shade. Zone 4
 Hydrangea quercifolia (oakleaf hydrangea)

From Middlesex, England in the early part of the century, this shrub has attractive yellow-green new growth over bright green leaves below throughout the season and is wonderful for use in clipped formal hedges or left to grow its large, white flower clusters in summer. A carefree shrub that requires nothing once established. Grows 5-8' tall and 4-6' across in full sun or shade. Zone 5

Lindera benzoin (spicebush)
Bruised stems emit a strong, spicy-sweet odor, and bright yellow flowers cover these stems in April. Foliage turns a pleasing yellow in fall. Fruit occurs on female plants. Prefers moist, acid soil in full sun to part shade. This native plant grows 6-12' tall and around. Zone 4-9
 Mahonia aquifolium (Orgeon holly-grape)
Dark, semi-evergreen leaves turn beautiful bronze in fall. Foliage is heavy and glossy- very attractive. Small yellow flowers in May are followed by blue berries. Shrubs grow 3-5' tall and 2-4' across in part sun to shade. Once established, they require little care and can spread slowly by suckers. Zone 5

 Mahonia repens (creeping Orgeon holly-grape)
Dark, green, holly-like leaves on shrubs that resemble their M. aquifolium cousins, but on plants growing only 1-2' tall. Excellent underplanting in front of larger shrubs or perennials. Zone 3-7
 Myrica pennsylvanica (bayberry)
Fantastic semi-evergreen foliage is fragrant, and makes a wonderful contrast for junipers, grasses and other evergreens. Highly adaptable to different soils and sunlight conditions, it is also extremely heat and drought tolerant. Grows 5-12' tall with a similar spread, but can be pruned to control size. Zone 3-6
 Nandina domestica (heavenly bamboo)
Graceful and delicate layered evergreen foliage with a rusty color, this shrub will survive our winters with protection, pampering and a little luck! Shrubs grow 3' tall with a spread of 2-3'. Plant in full sun on a protected southern exposure close to a rock or cement foundation for maximum solar heat. Mulch heavily. Zone 6-9
 Philadelphus coronarius 'Minnesota Snowflake' (mockorange)
Growing well in dry situations, this shrub has very fragrant flowers which are single, white and about 1 1/2 inches across. Shrubs grow 5-7' tall and 4-7' across in sun or shade. Zone 4
Physocarpus opulus 'Summer Wine' (ninebark)
Black-purple foliage is topped with soft pink blooms. Hardy and drought tolerant like other ninebarks, shrubs should be cut back from time to time to keep their form neat and dense, but should be pruned immediately following summer bloom to avoid removing next year's flower buds. Unpruned, shrubs grow 5-6' tall with a spread of 4-5'. Hardy to zone 3.
Physocarpus opulus 'Mindia' (Coppertina ninebark)
A cross between the golden ninebark 'Dart's Gold' and the purple leaf ninebark 'Diabolo' , resulting in a plant with stunning orange-copper spring foliage, aging to rich red as it matures into the summer. White blooms in summer contrast with foliage. Like other ninebarks, Coppertina is also noted for its attract exfoliating bark and red seed capsules in autumn. Shrubs grow 8-10' high with a 5-6' spread. Zone 3 cold hardy.

This tough, durable shrub has exfoliating bark when mature, and is very adaptable to most conditions. This variety of the native sports nice yellow foliage color, followed by white flower clusters and red fruit. Grows 6-8' tall and wide. Zone 2-7

Showy purple leaf variety of ninebark with great contrasting white flower clusters. Wonderful large corner accent, or use as a colorful hedge. Very easy to grow, maturing to 6-8' tall and wide. Zone 2-7

A superior variety, Goldfinger has a profusion of showy flowers of golden-yellow all summer long. This compact hardy specimen is excellent as an individual or in mass plantings. Rhamnus frangula 'Ron Williams'
Fineline buckthorn combines the feathery foliage of 'Aspenifolia' with the narrow upright habit of 'Columnaris.' Use in narrow hedgerows for privacy, as an accent plant, or even in a patio container. It's a great vertical accent for the perennial garden, and the narrow habit is perfect for framing entrances. This is an extremely useful, architectural plant for the home or commercial landscape. Grows 6-9' tall with a spread of only 2-3'. Zone 4
 Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Lo' (dwarf sumac)
Low-growing sumac with rounded leaves that turn vivid scarlet in fall. Wonderful planted in mass around tall grasses, or alone on sharply sloping banks and along ditches. Excellent wildlife food and shelter. Zone 3-9
 Rhus typhina (staghorn sumac)
Hairy branch ends swell in late winter, resembling the horns of a buck. Lacy, graceful green foliage is speckled with tall, 6-8" burgundy-brown seed shoots throughout summer. Fall foliage is stunning, brilliant, scarlet red. Excellent wildlife food source. Grows 8-15' tall and tends to sucker and spread. Can be kept in check with periodic pulling of baby suckers, or left to naturalize a large area. Zone 3-8

As early as late February, hairy white buds begin to swell along the long stems of this huge shrub or small multi-trunk tree. Growing in virtually any soil under any conditions, space seems the only limitation to planting a pussywillow! Stems can be cut in January and brought indoors to force for wonderful early spring arrangements. Grows 15-25' tall with a spread of 12-15'. Zone 4-8
 Salix integra 'Hakuru Nishiki'
Finely textured, variegated leaves of green are splashed with white and a blush of pink. Shrubs can be kept pruned and make wonderful potted specimens, or allowed to grow to their full potential of 8-12' high and wide. Variegation holds best in afternoon shade, and plants in full sun require more supplemental water. Zone 5

Another early spring catkin producer, only stems are jet black, and pussy buds dark brown-black. Stunning specimen with similar low-maintenance needs of 'French Pink'. Grows 8-10' tall and wide. Zone 5
 Salix matsudana 'Torulosa' (corkscrew willow)
Can be used as a tree or shrub form, and is an interesting specimen in the landscape with it's twisted branches, loopy branches. Another variety, Ram's Horn, also has twisted, crushed leaves. Grows to 20' tall and 15' wide in sun or shade. Loves wet feet, but is also tolerant of dry soil. Zone 4
 Salix purpurea 'Nana' (dwarf arctic blue willow)

The European relative of our common ditch elderberry, this particular cultivar is a delicate variegated version with green leaves edged in white. This spruce variety was found in Canada in 1906 and has taken over the American landscape by storm since. Tiny green needles can be lightly sheard into topiary shapes, and with their extremely slow growth (about 1/2" per year) and cold hardiness, they make an excellent choice for year round containers. In Kansas, dwarf Alberta spruce grow to 6' in about 35 years, with a spread of 3-4' at the base. Zone 2-5
