Perennials
Allium caeruleum
The elusive true blue in a low maintenance, hardy 12-15" tall plants. 1 1/2" sky blue, round flower heads appear in June. Great in the rock garden, green roof or among perennials. Xeric plants produce nectar for butterflies. Zone 3
Allium schoenoprasum subspecies senescens 'Mongolian Gem'
Northern Asia native has nice blue-green foliage growing to 18" high with large, 2" lavender-pink globe flowers . Foliage turns bronzy-yellow in fall. Can be used as a culinary herb as well as an ornamental. Same hardiness and xeric qualities as other Alliums. Zone 3
Baptisia australis 'Purple Smoke' (baptisia, false indigo)
Showy racemes of pea-shaped indigo-colored flowers in late spring. Dependable and long-lived, this plant does well at the back of the garden, and in a wide range of soils. This hybrid is a chance cross of B. australis and B. alba, and has the charcoal-gray stems of alba and the blue color from australe. Grows up to 3' in height. Zone 3
Baptisia 'Carolina Moonlight'
This sister to the popular Baptisia 'Purple Smoke'. 53" spikes appear in late spring with stunning 18" spikes of soft buttery-yellow. Long-lived, heat-loving, and drought tolerant. Zone 4
Baptisia 'Wayne's World'
 A selection of the native B. alba, B. 'Wayne's World' is a vigorously growing selection that forms a full-figured upright clump to 4' tall. In spring, 3' wide emerging clumps are topped with dramatic 18" spikes of white.
Echinacea purpurea 'Coconut Lime'
 A double flowering white coneflower grows 24-30" tall. Zone 3
Echinacea purpurea 'Pink Double Delight'
 A double flowering pink coneflower with 3" blooms on plants that grow to a petite 18-24" height. Zone 3
Echinacea purpurea 'Pixie Meadowbright'
 Masses of 3" blooms cover this true dwarf coneflower, which grows to a petite 18-20" high. Habit s very dense and thick. Zone 3
Epimedium rubum
Prolific produced crimson and white flowers cover wiry stems in spring. Like other epimediums, these little beauties fill the dry shade void! Grows 9" high and 12" wide. Zone 5
Euphorbia 'Blackbird'
Velvety, deep purple foliage is darkest in full sun and contrasts well with spring flowers. It is a very compact and bushy plant that will provide color in the garden all year round. Yellowish 'flowers' cover the plant through to late spring. Also great in containers where a dramatic statement is required, and combines beautifully with silver foliage. Grows 18" x 20".
Helictotrichon sempervirens
This plant is the frosting on the cake for any garden, adding texture and color over the entire growing season. Stiff gray-blue leaves are very striking, and provide the foundation for the ornamental 4’ tall flower spikes that shoot up and ripen to a soft brown by midsummer. Zone 4-9

Krascheninnikovia lanata (winter fat)
This western US native plant can be used as a shrub as a soft, silver-gray accent. Plants provide winter interest, and grow to a height and spread of 2'. Found in western half of the US, north into Canada and south into Mexico, it's cold and heat hardy and drought tolerant. Zone 4
Seseli gummiferum (moon carrot)
 Fine, ferny silver rosettes 8-10" tall are topped on 15" stems with umbells of small dusty pink flowers that make great cuts. Excellent contrast perennial, foliage also has a nice bronze-pink fall color. Zone 5
Non-hardy succulents for containers
Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop'
Grow in full sun to light shade Plants can grow to 3' tall and 2' wide. Originates from Morocco. Large, dark rusty-purple rosettes at branch tips make this a wonderful succulent for trough gardens and containers, but can be planted as an annual in the ground. Try some in a low bowl with blue fescue and 'Anjelina' sedum for a color/texture extravaganza!
Agave sebastiana 'Baja'
From northern Baja, California, this rare and unusual plant will make an excellent container plant with thick blue spiky foliage. Another fantastic foliage plant from VVN for spectacular container creations!
Crassula 'Campfire'
Low-growing 6" tall to 2-3' tall wide succulent, colorful gold and scarlet foliage is topped with clusters of white flowers in summer. It does best in part sun and requires shade in hotter sites. Beautiful in succelent combo containers with grasses.
Crassula 'Lizard's Tail' (watch chain, rattail crassula)
 African succulent with rough textured green foliage that resembles a small conifer. Prefers partial shade and well drained soil. Excellent in mixed succulent combo planters.
Ledebouria socialis 'Violacea'
The fleshy pointed-tipped leaves of this short (under 12") bulb are bright gray purple with green blotches above; the underside is all purple. On stalks 20-25 small flowers have greenish petals with white markings and purple stamens. Only water when in leaf; it goes semi-dormant during the summer.
Annuals
Asclepias curassavica 'Silky Gold' & "Silky Deep Red'
Larval and nectar plant of monarch and queen butterflies, these annual butterfly milkweeds have vivid yellow and red blooms all summer. Collect seed in fall for next spring!
Begonia 'Bonfire'
Enjoy a fiery profusion of bright red-orange blooms all summer long. Not only is this plant beautiful, but it’s maintenance free—no pruning necessary! Grows in a bushy round form with new flowers continuously replacing old ones. Grows 18-36" tall and spreads 18-24". Great in hanging baskets or containers. Drought-tolerant.
Bracteantha 'Sundaze Flame'
Cheery bright yellow strawflowers with fiery red and orange tips. These heat and drought tolerant annuals grow 10-14". Try also 'Mojave Dark Red' with deep burgundy-red blooms make excellent dried flower arrangements.
Calibrachoa 'Minifamous Double Pink'
Fully double million bells in deep pink with the same great summer performance of its single flowering kin. Try some with 'Diamond Frost' Euphorbia in a hanging basket this summer. Wow!
Cosmos 'Chocolate'
Try this deep burgundy cosmos with any other color in the butterfly garden. Pairs beautifully with silver or gold foliage, too. Use them for cut flower arrangements to try even more color combinations.

Russelia Nightlights Tangerine
1" tubular, tangerine blooms cover this flowing 12-24" annual with fine green foliage. Grown in sun to partial shade, it has moderate water requirements and makes a wonderful filler or stand alone. Fine texture and soft color make it a wonderful companion with other plants in beds, borders and containers.
Tropicals & Foliage
Cordyline 'Red Sensation'
Spiky, deep burgundy foliage makes a great house plant in winter, and can be moved outdoors for patio and porch through the summer months.
Cyperus papyrus'Egyptian'
Bog-loving papyrus can be grown in a bowl on porch or patio, then brought indoors for the cold season. Tall plumes make dramatic decoration. Water should be changed out monthly to prevent odor.
Ensete maurelii
A non-hardy banana tree for indoors, and patios during summer. This cultivar's foliage is edged in burgundy.
Jacobinia
This South American tropical makes a continuous display of pink flowers all year. Plants should be kept in shade through the summer, then in an eastern or low light area indoors for the winter. Water regularly. They'll grow 3-4' high and wide, but should be cut back in spring to keep the form neat. Flower attract hummingbirds in summer.
Herbs
Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing' (black chervil)
Beautiful purple foliage is finely cut, with small white flowers in its second year. This biennial plant is Zone 7 hardy, but can be grown for its lovely foliage as an annual and used as a gourmet garnish.
Mentha a. citrata 'Orange' (orange mint)
Used in cologne for its marvelous scent, it's also a culinary herb used recipes for salads and drinks. Grows 12-18" tall. Zone 4
Nashia inaguensis (Mojean tea)
A native of the Bahamas that's used to add vanilla flavor to tea. An excellent bonsai subject with small leaves and tiny white flowers. Plants grow 2-3' tall and wide. This non-hardy Zone 8 herb must be grown in a pot and brought indoors for the winter.
Veggie Plants
Chocolate Mini Bell Pepper
Gourmet miniatures grow to a doll-sized, cute as a bug's ear 2" with all the flavor of a full-sized bell. These bite sized treats can be stuffed, pickled, canned or eaten fresh as a snack. Also makes a delicious and unusual accent to hors d'oeuvre platters and salads. High yielding plants can grown grown in ground or containers.
Trees
Aesculus turbinata (Japanese horsechestnut)
This white flowering Japanese horsechesnut has superior resistance to summer leaf scorch common in Aesculus species. June flowers are appreciated by hungry bees, and seeds ripen in September. This tree grows happily in sandy, loamy and heavy clay soils but requires well-drained soil in partial shade to full sun. Matures to a height of 60 feet and a width of 30-40 feet.
Prunus maackii (Amur chokecherry)
Prunus maacki is a densely branching, rounded tree, growing 35 to 45 feet tall. White 2-3" long racemes of flowers bloom in late spring, although this tree is not usually grown for its flowers. A multitude of tiny, red-black fruits ripen on the tree in late summer. Bark is beautiful and ranges in color from cinnamon-brown to yellow-brown. Sometimes the bark is shed in shaggy masses, sometimes it is relatively smooth. Requires well drained soil. Introduced into cultivation in 1878.
Evergreens
Cryptomeria japonica 'Yoshino' (Japanese cedar)
This is a fast growing pyramidal evergreen with blue-green foliage through the summer turning to bronze for winter. Trees reach a height of 35-40' and a spread of 20-30'. A good choice for a fast-growing privacy screen planting, especially in a large scale mixed planting where diversity makes a healthier landscape. Hardy in zones 5-9.
Shrubs
Physocarpus opulus 'Summer Wine' (ninebark)
Black-purple foliage is topped with soft pink blooms. Hardy and drought tolerant like other ninebarks, shrubs should be cut back from time to time to keep their form neat and dense, but should be pruned immediately following summer bloom to avoid removing next year's flower buds. Unpruned, shrubs grow 5-6' tall with a spread of 4-5'. Hardy to zone 3.
Physocarpus opulus 'Mindia' (Coppertina ninebark)
A cross between the golden ninebark 'Dart's Gold' and the purple leaf ninebark 'Diabolo' , resulting in a plant with stunning orange-copper spring foliage, aging to rich red as it matures into the summer. White blooms in summer contrast with foliage. Like other ninebarks, Coppertina is also noted for its attract exfoliating bark and red seed capsules in autumn. Shrubs grow 8-10' high with a 5-6' spread. Zone 3 cold hardy.
Rhamnus frangula 'Ron Williams'
Fineline buckthorn combines the feathery foliage of 'Aspenifolia' with the narrow upright habit of 'Columnaris.' Use in narrow hedgerows for privacy, as an accent plant, or even in a patio container. It's a great vertical accent for the perennial garden, and the narrow habit is perfect for framing entrances. This is an extremely useful, architectural plant for the home or commercial landscape. Grows 6-9' tall with a spread of only 2-3'. Zone 4
roses
Ebb Tide
Added to the VVN collection for our 10th anniversary! Medium-sized, hardy shrubs with dusky deep purple buds swirl open to double, old-fashioned flowers of velvet plum washed with a smokey haze. Intense clove fragrance.
Home Run
This flame red hardy shrub rose is the offspring of the well known Knock Out®. Like it's father, Home Run has excellent resistance to black spot but, unlike Dad, is also completely resistant to powdery mildew. Add this to the growing list of must-have landscape roses.
