Landscape Uses, Planting and Care
- Because heating in winter can cause the air to be very dry, placing humidity-loving fuchsia plants on a pebble tray can help maintain humidity around the plant. A pebble tray is a shallow dish full of pebbles and water that the plant sits on, providing humidity without leaving the plant roots soaking in water. Fuchsias like to be moist but not soggy. Watch to make sure the plant does not dry out too much. Remove berries and stems that start to die — they steal nutrients from the plant.
- A high amount of light is essential for good growth over the winter, so a sunny window is ideal. Just be sure the plant is not cooking in the sun!
- Keep an eye out for spider mites. When they take up residence you'll see webs between the leaves, and the foliage will look silvery. You can prevent spider mites by frequently washing plants in the shower under a gentle mist about every third watering). In a pinch you can use organic insecticide to keep the worst infestations under control.
