| This southeastern native woody vine grows up to 50 feet long, and produces clusters of orange-red, trumpet-shaped flowers 2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches across in spring. Sometimes seen high in the trees, tendrils give cross vine the ability to cling to stone, bricks and fences with no special care. Persistent, glossy, semi-evergreen leaves change from dark green in summer to reddish-purple in winter, and make this a useful year round ornamental. Plant in full sun to part shade in most any soil. Cross vine is heat tolerant, and provides an early nectar source for butterflies and bees. The bright blooms also attract hummingbirds. |
