These hardy natives range across the entire eastern half of North America and in pockets farther west and grow in slow spreading colonies if not kept in check through root pruning. They grow in seemingly impossible conditions into gracefully branched 10-15' canopies that bloom in summer. Blooms turn to russet-red seed plumes that stand above the textured foliage and provide valuable wildlife food. Fall foliage is flame red, and the artistic trunks and branching make a splendid winter landscape.
